In-situ qualification of metallic bipolar plates

ZBT has developed a multifunctional test cell for in-situ qualification of stack components in real cell operation. With an active area of 25 cm², the test cell achieves power densities above 1 W/cm² for automotive conditions, and enables detailed investigations of durability and performance of coatings for metallic bipolar plates, but also for MEA, gasket materials and bipolar plate substrates.

With the testcell, ZBT expands the service portfolio regarding qualification and benchmarking of stack components for partners from industry and academia, and complements the existing lab infrastructure for the characterization of fuel cell components.

Proprietary Test Cell (Utility patent DE202016102056U1 German Patent and Trademark Office):

  • Metallic sheet metal bipolar plates
  • Active area: 25 cm2
  • Power density > 1 W/cm2
  • Compaction: max. 2.5 MPa on active area
  • Sealable by o-rings or FIP gaskets
  • Inserted in commercial available test hardware Baltic qCF
  • Temperature range: RT...180°C
  • Voltage monitoring directly contacted to the bipolar plates

  • Short term operation (IV-curve)
  • Long term operation (Degradation)
  • Testing according to ZBT AST-protocols or customer operation parameters
  • Pre- and post operation analysis of bipolar plates according to DOE

The testcell was developed in the project PRECOAT(BMWi 03ET6030A), production partner is Gräbener Maschinentechnik.
