Department of Microsystems and Fluid Mechanics

The Department of Microsystems and Fluid Mechanics develops portable fuel cell systems in a power range up to 100 watts as well as microstructured components for fuel cell systems in larger power ranges. In addition, all issues concerning the design and characterization of fluid mechanical components within the ZBT are also adressed.

Motivation for micro- and miniature fuel cells

The motivation for the development of small and portable fuel cells is the increased energy consumption of today's mobile electronic devices like smartphones or tablet PCs. Fuel cells can be used as portable, self-contained chargers as well as a replacement for the integrated accumulator. The advantages are, e.g.  self-containment, rapid recharge and a higher energy density.

Microsystems

Additionally, fuel cell systems with greater power than 100 watts contain components which are designed and manufactured with the help of microsystem technology. Application examples are sensors to record the operating data or microstructured surfaces to reduce the electrical contact resistances.

Fluid Mechanics

The fluid mechanics group combines flow measurement (µPIV, PIV, LDV of single- and multiphase systems) with numerical flow simulation (with commercial and open source tools). Interdepartmentally, the fluid mechanics group works on the investigation of flow phenomena, the improvement of flow geometries and development of innovative measurement techniques.
