Generating hydrogen

It is of fundamental necessity to clarify the hydrogen supply of fuel cells fort he market introduction of such systems. PEM fuel cells require a hydrogen-rich gas for its operation and hydrogen infrastructure is not available. Hence, it is a core technology to produce this energy carrier from hydrocarbons for the application of fuel cells today. Already ZBT has successfully developed and manufactured numerous reformer systems in the power range of 1 to 30 kW for diverse project partners in Germany and abroad. The ability of scaling the patented technology to different power levels enables a customized development for various applications.

Furthermore the pre-and post-processing steps for the purification of fluids are a core competence of ZBT. Desulphurization of fossil and biogenous hydrocarbons is of mayor interest and is defined as a special research subject. Sophisticated sulphur analysis has been setup to enable the characterization of desulphurization material. Besides the reformat gas contains contaminants for the fuel cell like carbon monoxide. Different gas purification units have been developed, manufactured and tested as prototypes by ZBT to ensure the necessary purity. Catalysts are the key to a successful development, which are characterized in precise and automated test facilities.
